Have you ever wondered what color really is? Color is all around us, but what do you really know about it and how it affects your day to day life?
Color is determined by the frequency at which light is visible to the human eye. The frequency is the rate at which a vibration (either light, sound, radio, etc.) creates a wave, and each color of the visible spectrum is created by that wave.
The visible spectrum of colors, more commonly abbreviated by the first letter of each color, ROYGBIV, also happens to correspond with the seven major chakras, starting at the root and moving up to the crown. Root - Red Sacral - Orange Solar Plexus - Yellow Heart - Green Throat - Blue Third Eye - Indigo Crown - Violet By building on this information, these awarenesses become ingrained knowledge, and we can start to understand that everything is energetically intertwined. This also means that we can alter our own energy using different vibrations, or simply put, different colors. I'd like you to think about all of the ways that color is used as an expression and how color surrounds your life already. For example, stop signs are red because they are designed to bring attention, to ground ourselves in the moment and pay attention to what’s going on around us. Once you start to pay closer attention to how color is used, you may start to notice more synchronicities. For instance, you may notice how doctors offices are often painted light, soothing shades of green to help facilitate healing energy. There are a number of ways that you can incorporate the healing energy of colors into your daily experience. Maybe you’ll find a red cushion to sit on while meditating to help you ground. Or perhaps, you’ll paint a wall blue in your office to help you focus on clear communication. You can physically wear the rainbow of colors for a healing effect as well. Specific colors can be worn in clothing, shoes and accessories on a daily basis to boost your chakra. If you're looking to boost your creativity, wearing an orange shirt can help stimulate the sacral chakra. Gemstones or crystals are a great way to work with a certain color's energy. Crystals come in every color of the rainbow and will work best with their coordinating colored chakra. One of the most versatile stones to have is a clear quartz, which is considered a master crystal since it acts as a prism and therefore technically would contain the entire spectrum of colors. There are now a number of technological advances can assist you in providing color therapy in new and unique ways in the comfort of your own home. There are now light bulbs that can change to any color of the spectrum, making these great not only for mood lighting, but to be able to bathe the entire room (and it’s energetic contents: people, pets, crystals, plants, etc.) in a specific color. One of my favorite new applications of color therapy is the shower head that cycles through all of the colors of the rainbow. This application acts as a chakra double whammy by bathing your entire being in light and cleansing it in water simultaneously. I have been known to stand under the shower, with the lights off, blaring music and having a solo dance party moving energy through my body. Another great time-tested option is a light box, which is a portable device that replicates the sun’s balanced light spectrum. This tool is often prescribed to individuals who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), who have a vitamin D deficiency and/or those who may benefit from some extra sunlight. This is a great tool for anyone who finds themselves fighting the "wintertime blues" year after year. Color and light have a much larger impact on our lives than we consider. Recently, tech giant Apple has added a setting to dim the blue lights on their mobile devices between the hours of 10 pm and 7am to help promote more restful sleep. Other tech companies have started to follow suit, looking deeper into the effects of the blue light on our brain function. Personally, I find myself very sensitive to ANY light, both natural and artificial. In the past, I did not have any traditional lighting in my bedroom; it is too obtrusive on my senses, especially as a clairvoyant. I used a combination of overhead black lights, lava lamps and salt lamps. Not only did this make me feel like I live in a genie lamp, but this combination provided me with enough light to see without overwhelming my sensitive eyes. Having lower lighting allowed my eyes to take in a lower level of light, which for me, allowed for heightened clairvoyance. I found that I am able to see energy much more clearly at this darker level. I do notice that the nights that I accidentally fell asleep with the black lights on, my dreams seemed to be more vivid as it activated my third eye chakra during the sleep cycle.
