Have you heard all the buzz about that pink salt lately? Are you wondering what it is exactly and what all the fuss is about? This miraculous mineral can be utilized in many applications such as cooking, in health and beauty treatments and as functional home decor.

Identifying Pink Himalayan Sea Salt

The most noticeably different aspect of this salt is its rich color, ranging anywhere from transparent to its most known pink, even to dark red.  This mineral is specially mined from the second largest salt mine in the world, Khewra Salt Mines in Pakistan, located at the foothills of the Himalayas.  To ensure that you are getting real pink Himalayan sea salt, make sure that the product is indeed from Pakistan, and not from China, for example.

You can find this miracle salt in a number of different applications across culinary, decorative and beauty realms. I've seen pink Himalayan sea salt used in everything from serving platters to shot glasses; salt lamp pyramids to candle holders; bath soaks to body scrubs.

Health Benefits

Himalayan pink sea salt is considered to be healthier than regular salt since there are no additives and it undergoes minimal processing. The 84 trace elements help to replenish your body's natural reserves.  Since there are trace elements of so many minerals, this salt also contains less sodium than your typical table salt.

This powerhouse of minerals also helps the body to stay hydrated by introducing electrolytes into the system (sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate and sulfate). I know a number of people who actually put a pinch of salt into their drinking water to help their bodies stay properly hydrated.

This salt can be used while cooking in place of regular table salt or kosher salt. While it is found in a variety of refinements, fine grain and medium course grain seem to be the most popular.  Larger grains will often be sold coupled with a grinder to ensure freshness and customization in size.  These can be found nearly everywhere from grocery stores to big-box warehouses.

Decoration & Negative Ionization

Pink Himalayan salt is also commonly used in home decor in the form of lamps and candle holders.  Salt lamps can take a natural form, or come in novelty options such as balls, pyramids and different colored lights.  Natural styled lamps and candleholders will vary in size, shape, and color.

Salt lamps are a great way to cleanse and refresh the energy in your space since they naturally cleanse the air around you by producing negative ions, which help to balance out negative energies.  This negative ionization process is also what makes rainstorms and waterfalls so tranquil.

Negative ions help to balance out positive ions that are put out by electronic devices (televisions, computers, etc.).  They work to reduce germs in the air, so salt lamps are often recommended to people with asthma or other bronchial issues.  An increase in negative ions increases the flow of oxygen to the brain creating a healthier environment for the body overall.

Detox & Wellness

Perhaps one of my favorite applications of this miracle salt is in the bath tub! This is possibly one of the most luxurious bath salts I've ever felt, mimicking the properties of amniotic fluid when mixed with water.  If you're wondering how I draw my perfect bath, check out this blog post on salt baths and self care.

Another amazing benefit of a pink Himalayan salt bath is detoxification. These baths help to move energy and draw out any toxins and impurities in the system.  The hot water from the will also make you sweat profusely, allowing you to feel the detoxification and energy movement throughout every pore of your body.

In addition to helping detoxify the physical body, this salt helps to cleanse and remove debris on the energetic bodies as well.  This can be especially helpful in maintaining healthy energy after stressful work days or after being in densely populated environments.  I recommend regular salt baths to all of my clients who identify as empathic or sensitive.

Trace Elements

Perhaps the most unique aspect of this amazing salt is that it contains trace amounts of 84 minerals.  Regular table salt is chemically NaCl or Sodium Chloride, comprised of only two elements: sodium and chlorine.  Another commonly used salt is epsom salt or magnesium sulfate, which is chemically comprised of magnesium, sulfur and oxygen.

Curious about what those 84 trace elements in pink Himalayan sea salt are? I was too! Below you will see the full list of all the trace elements of this powerhouse salt. Please note, there may be some elements on this list that are not typically for consumption, however those listed contain very trace amounts and are nowhere near toxic or poisonous levels.  These are all naturally occurring elements found in nature!
